Get2Go 2014

hey WARTS,
well another year of adventure racing is done and dusted with the Get2Go grand final finishing off the year. Our junior team went over to the barrier for six days of racing. doing well in the first three days of activities placing 4th with no point difference. However, we were are unable to stay in that position after the expedition finishing in 7th. Everyone had a great week away. Fingers crossed we can get back there next year and give it another shot.

A big thank you to all the parents for the support for the kids and myself, especially Bruce, Frances and Steve.

Keep your fitness up and see ya in 2015

Last minute change to training

Hey Guys,

So sorry to be making this last minute change but I have come down with a bug and am unable to participate in the training this weekend.

This will not affect the days events, you will just not be able to stay over at night as I am not able to take care of you.

I will text you my address tonight, please meet Bruce and Shaun at my place at 10 am sharp.

The day will finish at 5pm, you will need to be picked up from my place.

This means that you can disregard the food aspect of the plan. You will just need to ensure you have enough food, snacks and gear to last the day. Obviously disregard the overnight equiptment.

We will make a plan for Sunday at end of day tomorrow.

If anyone needs a ride, Bruce will be coming and with spare seats so contact Jaden.

Once again I appologise for any incovienance,

Team for Get2Go

Hi Guys,
As we have discussed from the beginning of Junior Adventure Racing we can only take eight people to Great Barrier Island, and based on what I feel are important skills to have for this particular event I have had to make a very tough decision, espically in regards to the large number of ver capable and commitent girls that we have had.

I am more than happy to discuss my reasons for making this decision, however you know the skills required to succeed at this particular event. I hope that all of you will continue to adventure race, and continue to train once we get back from Get2Go as we prepare for the New Zealand Secondary School Adventure Racing Champs in March.

There are ten names listed below and these people will continue to train on Tuesday Mornings, Tuesday After School (Nav training), and Wednesday After school. Well done to the following people:

Macey
Geneva
Madi
Courtney
Nicole
Connor M
Mika
Jayden
Wilson
Connor H

Trainings

Hey Team,
Well done to everyone who gave the run ago this morning. Heard it was a long one, but good to see where peoples fitness is as we get further through the training programme.

We decided that we will not have a training on Labour weekend, which means that we will be doing the ocean beach training on Saturday the 18th of October, which means you can have the choice to attend the orienteering on Sunday. As I said earlier, Steve Hill is running this training, and is offering rides out to ocean beach. If you are wanting to get a ride, you need to meet at WGHS gym at 7.30am.

Trainings for this term:
Tuesday morning fitness training. Meet at WGHS gym at 6.30am.
Wednesday after school training. Meet at WGHS gym at 3.40pm.

Contact me if you have any questions.

Training Changes

Hi WARTS,
Sorry to have taken so long to post. Thankyou for the messages and well wishes. Yes, I have a wee little girl 6 pounds 13 ounces on Friday morning and we are both doing very well. No name at present, but I feel we will be getting one soon.

I have decided that it would not be a good idea for me to come to training tomorrow as my wee dot is not yet a week old. However I have arrange for other experiences for you. Malika Davis (outdoor ed teacher) will be taking you for rock climbing and rope skills from 9.30-11.30, you will then have some food and drink, then you will be doing a navigation activity at Mair Park. This will see you returning to school around 1.30.

Please make sure you bring all your gear in a pack that you can run with as you will not be able to leave it at school.

Saturday is all still going ahead, and I hope to see you all there for a run around.

There has been a realisation that on the 19th of October we have a orienteering event at Lovells Farm, however I had pencilled that date in for the ocean beach training. Could you let me know on Saturday if we changed the date to the 25th of October would people still be able to make that?

Enjoy tomorrow.

Holiday Training

Hi Juniors and Seniors:

So based on what replies I have received from people regarding holiday training, here are the dates that I need to you to keep clear over the next few weeks. I welcome any junior or senior to take part in these trainings. If you could let me know which one you will be attending that would be great.

28th of September: Houtu Orienteering
You need to visit the Whangarei Orienteering Club website to find out information about this event. Just type "whangarei orienteering" into google and click on the "news" link and it will tell you about the event. I think it would be worth while going out on your own so that we can see who is improving on their nav.  You should be aiming for a orange course, or you could do Tom's rogaine course.

9th of October: Training at Whangarei Girls High School
Please meet at girls high at 9.30am, we will be based at girls high, however you will need to bring running shoes, food, raincoat, thermal top and persnoal medication. We will finish up around 2pm. Please bring a towel.

11th of October: Training at Glenbervie Forest (meet at Adventure park)
Please meet at 9.30am with an appropriate pack for running, as well as at least 1ltr of water, food, raincoat, thermal and personal meds. This will be a rogaine based activity, so you will be covering a bit of ground.

19th of October: Ocean Beach Training
Meet at 8am at Ocean Beach. You will be doing a trail walk/run, problem solving, kayaking. Please bring, a 30ltr or bigger pack, 2ltr water, food to last 6 hours,  towel, thermal top and bottoms, woolen hat, raincoat, change of clothes, wetsuit (optional).  You will need to be picked up from smugglers bay carpark around 2.30pm. Steve Hill is running this training, so if there are any parents that could help him on the day with transport or running activities please contact him.

1st and 2nd of November: Overnighter for the ten people training for Get2Go
More information to follow

16th of November: Lactic Turkey P6 Adventure Race
More information to follow

22nd and 23rd of November: Overnighter for the ten people training for Get2Go

Auckland Secondary School Rogaine Champs

Hi Everyone,

Thank you for getting back to me so promptly about your attendance in the event.
Please find below your teams and other gear list information. As I am not attneding the event, you will need to be super organised, and let me know if you require any of the gear on the gear list.
Race briefing will happen at 10.30am, with maps being released for planning at 10.45, and race starting at 11am. Things should be all rapped up by 1.30pm, which should see you back at school around 4pm. Please let your parents know when you get to Wellsford what time you will be home.

It would pay to spend time looking at maps of the area in the lead up to the event. They have said that the start and finish location will be different from last year, so please do not assume that it will be the same as last year. Location is Shakespear Regional Park, it is beautiful, but there are some solid hill climbs and a predator fence that you can only cross in some sections.

Teams:

Teams have been decided for a number of reasons; ability, fitness and age

Whangarei Boys High School:
Ryan Houba (20.11.96) and Shaan Hill (12.01.97)
Callum Hill (22.10.98) and William Dorahy (21.07.97)
Flynn Hill (22.10.98) and Matt Kingi (27 06.98)
Angus Dorahy (19.03.99) and Wilson Turner (25.08.99)
Mika Hill (30.08.00) and Jayden Maugham (24.11.00)

Whangarei Girls High School:
Grace Ruddell and Piper Mortimer (Junior)
Grace Elliot (1.02.99) and Julia Carter-Bell (05.03.99)
Taylor Campbell and Ella Poole-Crowe (06.08.98)
Macey Polwart (16.03.00) and Courtney Crum (13.09.00)
Madi Doar (29.6.99) and Geneva Overwater (Intermediate)
Ruby Parker and Sarah Adams (29.12.98)

Gear List:

As it is a 90minute event you may find that you don't need to take any water or food with you during the event, but that is your decision and you need to think carefully about what you will require (I will put back pack down but you may bot need to run with it). It would be worthwhile talking to someone who went last year. (Shaan, Callum, Madi, Ella, Flynn, Matt, Taylor)

Running shoes
Thermal
Towel
Plastic Bag
High Lighters and Pencil
Compass (I can supply them but you need to let me know)
Discription Holders (I can supply them but you will need to let me know)
Personal Medication- you must carry this on you all the time
Team Orienteering Shirts:  We have recently recieved funding for some orienteering shirts. There is enough for everyone to have a shirt, however I cannot garuntee that all the sizes will fit everyone, however I think it should be ok. It would be great if everyone can wear the uniform, which will be the shirt and then whatever pants you like. Girls the material that the shirts are made with is thin, so please be sensible about wearing a singlet or an appropriate sports bra. On using the shirt you are taking full responsibility for it, and you will need to wash the shirt and return it to me. The guidelines for washing the shirt are behind the tag. They are fitted shirts so please be good about wearing the correct size.
Lunch
Water (2Ltr)
Cell Phone
Jandals (to wear home)
Rain coat
Fleece Top
Watch (digital)
Track Pants (to wear down and back)

Transport:

Parents who are attending the event:
Janine Whitelaw (driving boys high van), Jan Polwart, Riaan Elliot, Venee Mortimer

Meet in the Whangarei Girls High School Carpark beside the Gym at 7.30, so that you can depart before 8am. Remember that teaching staff will be wanting to park, so please get your parents to leave their cars outside to the gym carpark so that teachers can get in there, and in no circumstances is anyone to park in the driveway.

I hope that you have now completed some of the squares on the training programme, and that your fitness is improving. Remember that it is going to take alot of self motivation to get out and train.

I would like to set a goal for this week:
Your goal is to learn as many climbing knots as possible, and what situation you would use the knot.
I helpful website is http://www.animatedknots.com/indexclimbing.php?LogoImage=LogoGrog.jpg&Website=www.animatedknots.com
This will be tested in a couple of weeks so please get to work.

Look forward to hearing from you regarding holiday training days.

Hillary Qualifier

Hey Team
Here is the information for the hillary qualifier. Please make sure that you keep checking the blog for more information.
I will post teams on Wednesday, please make sure that you have handed in the forms and money to girls high.
Meet at WGHS gym carpark at 5.50am as we will be leaving at 6.10am. Please do not be late.

Stage descriptions - There are two stages that make up the competition. You will find out the
exact details of what they involve on the day of the event.

Stage 1 is based on time. This will involve some simple navigation, running, problem solving
and about 20km of MTBing on forest roads and some short sections of sealed road. The
stage will be time based with the fastest team to complete the course correctly earning top
points and all others scaled based on their time behind the fastest team.
Stage 2 is points based. This will involve a bit more brain power and strategy with more
navigation and running in the mix. This stage will be a rogaine and based on points
depending on the number of checkpoints your team finds and penalty points for being late.
The faster you do Stage 1 the more time you will have to score points on Stage 2. There will
be a total maximum score up for grabs for the team that gets the most rogaine points, with
the others scaled from this.
Bonus Challenges On stage 2 in addition to the rogaine checkpoints there will be three
bonus team challenges each worth significant points. These challenges will be open to all
teams until 2.45pm and will be restricted to just 3 teams at a time. Each team can spend a
maximum of 20mins doing each challenge. The marshal at each challenge will manage this,
but if your team arrives and there are already 3 teams there, you have the choice to stay and
wait or go away (losing your place in the queue) and return later. If you arrive at 2.40pm you
will only have 5 mins to attempt the challenge. The scores for all three bonus challenges will
be collected and later scaled out of 100 and then added to your score from the rogaine
checkpoints. Think of the bonus challenges like they are high scoring rogaine checkpoints.

Rules –
• Obey all rules
• This is a team event and the whole team must be within 50m of each other (between the 1st
and 8th team member) at all times, unless otherwise directed by a marshal.
• All compulsory gear must be carried at all times, unless otherwise directed by a marshal. This
gear cannot be dropped and pick up later.
• Ensure that no litter is left anywhere on the course. You need to carry any rubbish with you.

Orienteering and MTB

Hey WARTS,
On the 25th of May we are having an orienteering event out at smugglers bay. That starts at 10am. I was approached by the new caretaker of Glenbervie MTB tracks who said thankyou for the work we have done, and that he is going to have a clean up day on the 25th of may. I was thinking after orienteering we could go to Gelnbervie forest to do some more track maintenance on Flipper and then have a ride.

Let me know via text if you are keen to help.

Liv

North island secondary school adventure racing champs

Who is keen to go to this?

Hi Folks

Entries are now open for our new Adventure Race, a 12 hour and 6 hour Adventure Race.

The event will take place on Saturday 13th September 2014 and will incorporate the North Island Secondary School Championships.

The event will be based from Tucks Bay, near Coromandel Township and with the exception of the Schools Championships, teams will not require a support crew.

The events include mountain biking, trekking, rifle shooting, mine exploration and navigation and all team members will require a wet suit.

The 12 hour event will have  kayaking and non-kayaking options and is open to teams of 4 or 2 (any mix).

The 6 hour event is non- kayaking and will be open to teams of 2, 3 or 4.

The School Championships is open to teams of 4 (any mix) and will include kayaking.

The theme for the event can be found on the website and it is hoped that it  will raise awareness to the plight of Coromandels Archey's Frog.

As usual we have an early bird option for teams and more information and online entry can be found on our website at www.arcevents.co.nz

Go-4-12 Information

Hey WARTS,
You will see below the game plan for next weekend. Please make sure that you have all of the gear, and there are some new items in the mix this time. The plan is to meet at WGHS gym at 6am on the Friday morning, and I would like you to make sure you are there ready to go, so that we can get away on time. If you have a large family tent that could hold two teams, please let me know so that we don't take so many items.
Make sure that you have discussed who will be bringing map boards for their bikes and what extra race food you would like your support crew to have. Try and be all sorted with your gear, as we are in a remote location where there is not alot of light, so the more sorted you are before going down to napier, the easier it will be when we get there.

ALL PARENTS MUST SIGN A WAVIER FORM ON FRIDAY MORNING. IF YOUR PARENT IS NOT DROPPING YOU OFF THEN YOU WILL NEED TO COLLECT ONE FROM ME BEFORE FRIDAY. YOU CANNOT RACE WITHOUT A SIGNED WAVIER FORM.

Hey Team,
This weekend we will not be meeting for MTB at Glenbervie. I am heading down to Slater Rd, to go orienteering and MTB at a Northwest event. If you think that you might be keen, let me know. I have put the link below, click on the two events on the 9th of March.

ARC

Hi WARTS
Here we go the first big event for the year, and we have a huge number of teams and parents attending. Please find below the teams that will be racing, all teams are entered in the 12 hour non kayak event. You will also find which parents will be support crew for you, as well as being in charge of your transport. There is also a gear list attached, so please read this carefully and let me know if you need anything.

There are 29 of us going down to the event, which in my mind works out to be 6 cars (although peter is coming down later, which will give us space going home). Please think about whether your car is suitable, knowing that there will be off road  travel, and that you will need to be able to take bikes (I have booked the school bike rack which takes 8). Accommodation is tenting, however I have hired a small studio directly next door to our campsite, which will act as a base and we can use the kitchen there and in the campsite.

Check out the weather that is coming next weekend, its going to potentially be very very wet and windy, make sure that you are prepared for this.

Please go onto the ARC page to get more information on the race format etc http://www.arcevents.co.nz/arc-adventure/raceinfo/

I would really recommend looking at maps of the area over the next week, especially up the Raglan Harbour, Pirongia Mountain, and the surrounding Hills. Wams is a good website for looking at walking tracks in the area or DOC.

We will be meeting at 11.30 at the bus bay, which is a change in venue from the gym. Please drop your gear off to me before 8.15 on Friday morning.

Race Food for the day (Protein, muesli bars, sandwich, leppin or similar, baking slice)
It is important that you are only eating protein  and carbs for the first half of your race (if not longer) foods high in sugar should really only be used in last few hours of a race. Please make sure that you have a variety of foods to eat such as sandwich, muesli bars, bacon egg pie etc. Remember that you have a support crew, so you do not have to carry everything in regards to food and drinks (you can plan on seeing them every four hours). Talk about it within your group and plan your food. We all know that keeping energy levels high will mean that you last longer and are able to perform.
