Hillary Qualifier
Hey Team
Here is the information for the hillary qualifier. Please make sure that you keep checking the blog for more information.
I will post teams on Wednesday, please make sure that you have handed in the forms and money to girls high.
Meet at WGHS gym carpark at 5.50am as we will be leaving at 6.10am. Please do not be late.
Stage descriptions - There are two stages that make up the competition. You will find out the
exact details of what they involve on the day of the event.
• Stage 1 is based on time. This will involve some simple navigation, running, problem solving
and about 20km of MTBing on forest roads and some short sections of sealed road. The
stage will be time based with the fastest team to complete the course correctly earning top
points and all others scaled based on their time behind the fastest team.
• Stage 2 is points based. This will involve a bit more brain power and strategy with more
navigation and running in the mix. This stage will be a rogaine and based on points
depending on the number of checkpoints your team finds and penalty points for being late.
The faster you do Stage 1 the more time you will have to score points on Stage 2. There will
be a total maximum score up for grabs for the team that gets the most rogaine points, with
the others scaled from this.
• Bonus Challenges On stage 2 in addition to the rogaine checkpoints there will be three
bonus team challenges each worth significant points. These challenges will be open to all
teams until 2.45pm and will be restricted to just 3 teams at a time. Each team can spend a
maximum of 20mins doing each challenge. The marshal at each challenge will manage this,
but if your team arrives and there are already 3 teams there, you have the choice to stay and
wait or go away (losing your place in the queue) and return later. If you arrive at 2.40pm you
will only have 5 mins to attempt the challenge. The scores for all three bonus challenges will
be collected and later scaled out of 100 and then added to your score from the rogaine
checkpoints. Think of the bonus challenges like they are high scoring rogaine checkpoints.
Rules –
• Obey all rules
• This is a team event and the whole team must be within 50m of each other (between the 1st
and 8th team member) at all times, unless otherwise directed by a marshal.
• All compulsory gear must be carried at all times, unless otherwise directed by a marshal. This
gear cannot be dropped and pick up later.
• Ensure that no litter is left anywhere on the course. You need to carry any rubbish with you.
• There will be other rules for different challenges along the way.
Scoring – The scores for both stages will be combined to give a total team score for the event.
Gear list –
This is an outdoor event taking place in winter. The New Zealand weather can do anything at any
time, so we want to know that you are prepared for whatever it throws at us. The weather could be
clear and warm or wet and extremely cold. Ensure you have multiple changes of clothes and be
prepared to get totally wet at some stage.
You need to be able to move around quickly and comfortably during the day. Below is the minimum
gear that you will need to have with you at all times throughout the day.
Your team will need 8 mountain bikes and helmets (in good working order) plus things like a
puncture repair kit, spare tubes, pump...etc for your bikes.
