Steer West to the Gladefest - Navigation Challenge and Karekare Gladefest - 3rd March 2012

The Lactic Turkey Karekare Rogaine is to be held on the 3rd March and you can choose to do a 1.5, 3 or 6 hour course.  The rogaine is for teams of 2-5 people and they are really social events.  The navigation is easy and maps provided - if you can read a street map then you'll be fine.  This event is based in the Waitakere Ranges around Karekare.  The navigation is reasonably easy as all the checkpoints are on tracks - no bush bashing through the thick Waitakere scrub!

Lactic Turkey and Auckland Council are proud to support Lone Kauri School with their fundraising through this Rogaine and a Karekare Summer Festival on the 3rd of March.  The Karekare Summer Festival will be held around the Rogaines finish area with live entertainment from Charlotte Johansen and band - www.charlottejohansen.co.nz – face painting, lolly scrambles for children and hot food / refreshments for all.  Please remember there is no eftpos at Karekare so cash only.

For those that haven't done one of our rogaines and may be asking "what is a rogaine?" - Here's how it works:

You turn up to register 1 hour before the start and pick up your race pack (9am) and start planning your route. Included in your race pack is a map to plan where you are going to go. The map is a topo map with a few corrections we have done to mark new tracks ! (we supply this map). On the map there are lots of checkpoints, each worth a different number of points.

The object is to get as many checkpoints in the time allowed (3 hours). So in the planning time (1 hour) you have to decide if you will go far away from the event centre to get a few of high pointers or stay closer and get lots of lower etc.

The catch is that you have to plan to be back on time, because for every minute that you're late after the 3 or 6 hours you lose 10 points (a big incentive to get back on time) and if you are more than half an hour late you get "timed out". You may find that you change from your planned route as you go because the tracks are faster than you thought - that's fine, you don't have to stick to your original plan. And you can come back to the event centre as often as you like.

So at 10am everyone heads off in lots of different directions - its a crazy start! The event is done in teams of 2-5 people and the teams must stay together at all times.

Then at 1pm everyone should be finishing at the same time. When you finish you add up all your points (each checkpoint has a wee flag with some letters on it that you have to record). We have a meal for all competitors (included in your entry fee) and then the prize giving.

Usually these are really social events with teams comparing where they went afterwards and debating the best route. The teams thing is great for the competitors too because you have to get along and take turns at navigating

So the NISSARC on the 24th of March has been cancelled due to low numbers. However the weekend before is the open event. The dates of which are the 16th-18th of March. I am still happy to take people but we need to get money and permission slips in asap.

I expect all seniors (including year 11) to be there and year 9 &10 to come along to as many as possible.

North Island Secondary School Adventure Racing Champs

Hey guys and gals,
I am keen to take you all to this next year. Please put it down on the calendar so that you don't plan anything else. It was definitely a highlight this year, and will count for colours and Northland secondary awards. This will be instead of going to Go412 which is unfortunately to far for us to travel next year. Get 2 Go Grand Final

Wow wow wow!!!! What a week we have had on Great Barrier Island and what a result. Congratulations to the 2011 Get 2 Go Team and to the whole junior Squad, there was more than just the eight students who made this a possibility, and you should all feel really proud of everything you put into this year. Bring on 2012! A quick thanks to all the parents and teachers who supported the team through out the season, next year will be even bigger, with more events and overnight camps, so watch this space.
